About

Hello! I'm Candace.

CandaceShankel_Photography_Aboutme.jpg

I was born and raised in the Bay Area, California, where I grew up with my parents, two sisters, and what some may call a small petting zoo (a countless number of cats, dogs, goldfish, hamsters, and hermit crabs). I was born into photography, my father, a landscape and architectural photographer, started my training at an early age. On trips to the Grand Canyon or along the California Coast, I shadowed my father. I learned how to use a light meter and even built a darkroom with him in our basement. Although my father has influenced my photography greatly, I differ from him immensely. I love shooting people. Portraits, editorial, lifestyle, you name it, I love it.

This was how I ultimately found myself in Brooklyn. Where I moved, rather spur of the moment to pursue my photography after earning my BFA in Photography at Seattle University. However, I am not solely a photographer, I enjoy exploring (i.e. aimlessly wandering), bargain hunting and trying my hand at any multitude of crafts (knitting, embroidery, printmaking, etc).

I am available for hire for any of your photographic needs! Have a crazy idea you've been meaning to flesh out? I can help make that idea a reality. I have experience with event coverage, photographing for schools, portraits, fashion, alternative practices, and editorial.

Check out my resume.
